Connection across the miles

How to keep your family connected across the miles

Families can live in different towns, states, or countries and still want to share everyday life. Family Common is a digital living room—a place for parents, children, grandparents, siblings, and other loved ones to feel closer across the miles.

Why this matters to me

I’m Pauline Mashburn, and my grandchildren live 500 miles away. I wanted a way to see the pictures they draw, share their everyday moments, and feel closer even when I couldn’t be there. That need inspired me to build Family Common—not only for grandparents, but for whole families who want a place to stay connected.

1. Make a small, regular connection

Choose a simple routine that suits your family: a Sunday catch-up, a quick call, or a photo from the week. Keep it short enough that it feels enjoyable rather than like another task.

2. Share the little things, not just the milestones

Share a child’s drawing, a meal you made, a pet’s latest adventure, or a small win from your day. Ask a question about what someone shares. Everyday details help relatives feel included, even when they can’t be there.

3. Keep your family’s stories together

Share a family photograph and the story behind it. Invite relatives of every generation to add their memories—from childhood adventures to the story of how two people met. Save them somewhere the family can return to together.

4. Do something together

Read the same book, swap recipes, try a drawing challenge, or play a game during a call. Let different family members take turns choosing. You don’t need a perfect activity—leave room for laughter.

5. Remember the dates that matter

Keep track of birthdays, school events, anniversaries, visits, and milestones. A message before a big day, followed by a question afterward, helps you stay involved in the things that matter to them.

6. Keep sharing private and comfortable

Agree as a family on what to share and who can see it. Choose a family space that fits your needs, and involve an adult when younger children use it.

Your family’s digital living room

Think of Family Common as a digital living room: a private, invite-only place for your family to gather, share memories, keep a shared calendar, and enjoy games together across the miles. It has a free plan, with an optional Premium plan at $7.99 per month per family for up to 50 members.
